Almost everyone has had some or other issues with wisdom teeth. Due to lack of complete understanding regarding wisdom teeth, many individuals are scared to address the issue. Many myths surround the wisdom of wisdom teeth.
WHAT IS WISDOM TOOTH?
It is the third molar tooth. They erupt around the age of 18-25 years. In very few people they erupt without causing a problem. In most individuals, they mal-positioned, partially erupted or locked inside bone (impaction).
WHY DOES WISDOM TOOTH CREATE PROBLEMS?
As humans have evolved from apes, their jaw size has also reduced but the number of teeth has remained the same. As the third molar is last to erupt, it often faces scarcity of space to erupt properly.
WHY DOES WISDOM TOOTH HURT?
a.Gum infection (Pericoronitis) – Often wisdom tooth partially erupts, so half part of the tooth is still covered under the gums. Food debris and bacteria accumulate under the gums causing pain, swelling, and restricted mouth opening. Often stressful circumstances exacerbate pain episodes.
b.Decay/ Cavity – They are often malpositioned and thus are hard to clean and maintain. Due to this reason, they often get decayed and cause pain. At times they may spread decay to the neighbouring tooth.
Loss of Wisdom! – Removal of the tooth has also nothing to do with the loss of wisdom. It does not have any relation to the biology of the brain.
Effect on Eyesight! – Also wrongly believed that removal of the tooth can adversely affect eyesight. Optic biology has no direct relation to teeth. Remember people without teeth don’t become blind.
REMOVAL IS NECESSARY?
Wisdom teeth can be considered vestigial as the appendix. They often don’t contribute towards chewing efficiency. Why removal is to be considered-
- Spread of infection – Infection from decayed tooth can spread in areas near to throat.
- Cyst Formation – Impacted teeth can form a cyst and destroy a good amount of jawbone.
- Neighbouring teeth – Malpositioned molars often get decayed and also decay their adjacent teeth, ultimately leading to more loss.
- Prematurity in contact – as they are last to erupt and have a tendency to be malpositioned, they can create prematurity and misalignment of other teeth. Due to which jaw joint may get affected.

In well-trained hands, it’s an absolutely safe procedure. Using advanced imaging modalities, the Doctor has exact insight about the case. A vast majority of cases are done under local anesthesia. With the latest technology of LASER, healing & recovery is uneventful.
